Student: Booting ! what is booting in computer? I don't really understand, Sir.
Teacher: Let me give a basic introduction about What is booting, Why is it necessary and How it is works and its types. Lets us start with example:
Example:
Mom : Good Morning
You : Good Morning! I am just get up.
When you getup early in the morning, we tried to recall all the memories of the past day. We recall information such as Where I am, Who I am, What is next task...etc. It is an automatic process which recall by your activate brain when you getup. A brain has a special space where these kind of information where stored and every morning it will help us to recall the information. This is a kind of "booting" for us.
Wow! if everything recall perfectly then new day will start with lots of enjoyment.
Note: This process always depends of fitness of the human.
In layman terms, the booting words means to start or restart. If we consider this word with computer system, a step by step procedure to start or restart your computer system when you press power button on or Restart button on. Every computer system which is running operating system needs booting process.
Note: The booting process always depends of Operating System types.
What is Booting?
A booting is a beginning process or preprocess to check about following things while you start with power button is on.
How booting process works in Computer System?
- Power supply goes to SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply)
- SMPS provide electricity to connected components.
- The CPU (Central Processing Unit) will check into BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and load first instruction from ROM (Read Only Memory).
- The first instruction is POST (Power On Self Test) check everything which is required to load Operating system - is working fine or not.
- CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)
- Checking hardware settings such as RAM (Random Access Memory) and other drives (Hard disk, Compact Disk, etc...)
- if everything successfully works in POST then your Operating System will begin or load.
What happened if booting is failed?
Let us understand with example of human body. In the morning, if we feel not well or unfit, what is your reaction given by/from body.
Same as, in the computer system, if the booting process goes to failed then your computer system generate some reactions.
- It may sound with different kind of beep.
- It may display different kinds of error message.
So, our computer system indicate that it has some trouble to booting computer system. Therefore, based to error or beep sound, we take an advice from Hardware specialist or Computer Doctor to resolve such an error.
Types of Booting:
We can start and restart computer system. Both terms are different as per name suggest.
1. Cold Booting or Hard Booting or Cold Start or Dead Start:
- Generally, we complete the process of start and switch off the computer as per our knowledge - is called as Cold Booting.
- It is rename as Hard booting or cold start or dead start, also.
- In Cold booting, the computer system follows by ALT + F4 keys.
- In Cold booting, the computer system follows the each steps of normal booting including BIOS, CMOS, CPU and POST process.
2. Warm Booting or Soft Booting or Hot Booting:
- We need to restart our computer without perfectly switch off the computer system or hangup or crash or error while working on computer system is called Warm Booting.
- It is renamed as Hot Booting or Soft booting, also.
- In Warm or HOT booting, the computer system follows by ALT, CTRL and DEL keys.
- It is doesn't include POST process.
